The 20 year old German has a lot of potential and he showed glimpse of excellent skills throughout the first two sets. Even Federer, himself, admired the German and predicted his bright future.
“It was a good battle. I was trying to put a lot of balls in play. It was tough. I don’t think I qualified for the ATP World Finals at 20. I’m very excited for his future. He’s a great guy. I’m relieved that in the last match I can play freely against Cilic. Maybe now I can work on my game a little.”
Roger Federer has now advanced to semifinals after winning first two encounters, one against Sock and the other one against Zverev. He will now play Marin Cilic on Thursday afternoon. Hopefully, it will increase the number of spectators in afternoon games as the numbers have been dramatically low this year due to absence of several high profile players such as Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Andy Murray, and Kei Nishikori and also due to early withdrawal by Rafael Nadal. However, Roger Federer’s games have been full house.
In the other match Jack sock won against Marin Cilic 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). It was a close contest, however, Jack Sock managed to pull off a win over Cilic. Jack Sock admired the toughness of game but he was happy with the outcome.
“That was a tough one, for sure,” Sock, here for the first time in singles, said after beating, the Croatian’s seventh defeat in eight matches here over the years. “It’s been an interesting morning so far,” the American said. “The fire alarm went off in our hotel at 4am.
“I love playing in London. You make me feel at home. My coach nicknamed me Showtime when I was young because I always love to play in front of people. There’s always a lot going on. I don’t even know what I’m doing some times.”
Roger Federer has now won 2 out of 2 games and is already into semifinals. This means he can play the last game i.e. against Cilic with full freedom and try to improve his game. On the other hand, Jack Sock and Alexandra Zverev have won 1 each while Marin Cilic lost on both instances.
Marin Cilic is already out of the tournament irrespective of the results of his game against Federer. Federer, who has already qualified for semifinals, will be joined by the winner of Zverev-Sock clash as the second semifinalist.
In the Pete Sampras Group, Pablo Carreno Busta has replaced Rafael Nadal after his withdrawal from ATP finals. Dimitrov will face Goffin and Carreno Busta will play his first game against Dominic Thiem on Wednesday.
