The Swiss star had another comprehensive victory in straight sets over Tomas Berdych. The world number 2. who managed to win all four matches without losing a set continued his excellent form and won another match in straight sets with a scoreline of 7-6(7-1), 6-3, 6-4.

This match was expected to be first real challenge for Roger Federer as he played first four matches against weaker opponents. Berdych started impressively by breaking in first set and getting a lead of 5-2 over Federer. However, Federer bounced back from there to overcome two set points and broke against Berdych. The set went into tie-breaker which Federer won easily at 7-1.

Federer managed to pull off a close escape in set one went onto perform impressively in second set as well. He managed to break late in the set and won the set at scores of 6-3 with Berdych trailing two sets down to love.

Berdych seemed to have tweaked any muscle and went for a short medical timeout with physio immediately after the second set.

Once, he returned to resume the third set, he had to win 3 consecutive sets in order to book a place in semifinals. However, keeping in mind Federer’s record, it was highly improbable for Berdych to win all three sets after being two set down.

The third set started with both players winning their service games. However, at scores of 1-1, The Swiss managed to break against Berdych and lead at 2-1. Berdych then immediately returned the favor by breaking against Federer. The scorelines were equal at 2 each. Federer again managed to break against Berdych and again got the lead of 3-2. From there on, Federer and Berdych served well and won their respective service games. Federer went on to win the third set 6-4.

Roger Federer will now face South Korean young sensation Chung Hyeon in the semifinals. With Nadal retiring in the fifth set against Marin Cilic in quarter finals and Djokovic losing to A. Ramos-Viñolas in round 3, Federer now stands favorite to win the Australian Open for the sixth time and defend his title. If he managed to do so, he will become joint winner for most singles titles. Djokovic and Emerson have also won 6 each.

Other Quarter Final Results:

In the other encounters, H. Chung won against Sandgren to become first ever South Korean player to reach a Grand Slam semi with scores of 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Marin Cilic won against Rafael Nadal as Nadal retired in the fifth set with a hamstring at scores of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 0-2.

K. Edmund won against G. Dimitrov at 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6. It was yet another unexpected result. He will now face Marin Cilic in the first semifinal.

For now, Marin Cilic looks favorite to take on Roger Federer in the finals. However, this year we have seen a lot of upsets so we cannot rule out unexpected Finale.The Swiss star, however, looks solid to defend his title as he is yet to lose a set in this year’s Australian Open.
