Roger Federer has not been on top rankings since 2012. He managed to win his first Grand Slam in form of Australian Open 2017 after almost 5 years. However, the tennis journalist “Courtney Nguyen” claims that Federer has no interest in reaching top spot.
However, the Swiss is expected to reach top spot as he is just 2 wins away from clinching the top spot. If he manages to reach the semis of ATP event in Rotterdam, he will become the oldest player in history to become no. 1 surpassing the great Andre Agassi.
Nguyen suggests that the reduced schedule and missing out last year’s clay court are clear signs of Federer not being bothered by rankings anymore. He played far less tournaments as compared to Nadal and ended up being the second seed player at year end.
On the other hand, Nadal puts his body under too much stress to get points and reach top rankings.
“This is a conversation we’ve had about Rafa for the last 10 years,” Nguyen said on the No Challenges Remaining podcast.
“The way that he plays the sport is not sustainable, that’s why there has always been questions about whether or not his body could endure the way that he plays.
“That is what’s frustratingly amazing about Roger. The way that he plays, he can do those things.
“That is his benefit and he is allowed to take advantage of it.
“If Rafa can’t take advantage of it because he has to play a full clay court season because he wants all the points because he cares about being No 1, like Roger doesn’t care about being No 1.
“If he cared about No 1 he would have adjusted his schedule accordingly.”
However, Federer has successfully defended his AU Open Title increasing his total grand slam tallies to 20 and he is set to easily reach semis of Rotterdam Open as Wawrinka is also out of the competition with a first round shocker.
