The winds of PSL are once again howling across Pakistan, bringing with it a wave of excitement for the crowd and a huge responsibility for the organizers. PSL 2018 will see the lights of more entertaining foreign players.
The forthcoming season of Pakistan Super League is going to be a grand affair with a number of foreign cricketers showing interest in the event. The third edition of PSL is said to be more fascinating with the addition of a sixth team called Multan Sultans.
Players for each team were selected at the draft held at the National Cricket Academy, Lahore on November 12th.
Headline picks of the season are Australian explosive batsman Chris Lynn and South African aggressive leg spinner Imran Tahir.
Each team has a squad of 20, having been given a salary cap of $1.2 million.
The Qalandars looking to turn their fortunes in PSL 3 picked Australia’s explosive batsman Christopher Lynn. Qalandars were the first to pick from the Platinum category and gave their vote in the right-handed batsman’s favor to form a destructive opening pair with New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum. The franchise didn’t just have the top order set but the bottom half too with bowlers like Sunil Narine and Mustafizur Rahman. New Zealand All-rounder Mitchell McClenaghan joined the team as a supplementary player along with Angelo Mathews.
The winning team of PSL season one, signed New Zealand Wicket keeper-batsman Luke Ronchi in the diamond round. Ronchi retired from international cricket earlier this year. Islamabad United has all the bases covered finely with JP Duminy, Misbah-ul-haq, Faheem Ashraf and Andre Russell. Shadab Khan has proved his mettle in the shorter formats while Muhammad Sami will be the leader of their pace attack. English right-handed batsman Sam Billings was signed as an opener to pair with Ronchi. For back-up Islamabad United availed the services of another explosive batsman Alex Hales. The team looks like well balanced with all the areas covered.
Multan Sultans is added as sixth team in this edition of PSL. The latest entrants sorted out a sturdy team. South African legspinner Imran Tahir was picked by the franchise in the platinum round. Tahir would be sharing the dressing room with Ahmed Shehzad and Darren Bravo. Ahmed Shehzad was dropped from the platinum category to the gold before being picked by the Sultans.The team will be captained by Shoaib Malik who himself is an excellent batsman with T20 experience all over the world. Kumar Sangakkara and Kieron Pollard bring a lot of international experience to the team.
Luke Wright, who played for Quetta in the past two seasons, will be wearing the Karachi Kings jersey in the upcoming season after being selected in the gold round. The Kings signed Colin Ingram in the platinum round while Mitchell Johnson in the diamond. Colin Munro due to a question over his availability for the entire season was snapped up as a supplementary player. Karachi Kings has as many as seven front line bowlers added in the squad. Imad Wasim will be captaining the side although they had Shahid Afridi in the squad.
The winning team of the 2017 PSL announced that their side will be led by Darren Sammy as before. The biggest pick for Zalmi was the West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. The franchise also roped in Tamim Iqbal and Evin Lewis as supplementary players.
The runner-up team of the last season in addition to strong batsmen Kevin Pietersen and Rilee Rossow present in their side, drafted in all-rounder Shane Watson in the Platinum round and Carlos Brathwaite in the diamond round.
Due to lack of budget, Lahore Qalandars couldn’t take part in the fourth round of the supplementary draft while Karachi picked a player at the end of their talent hunt program, which means they would have to pick from the emerging players.
Shadab Khan rose to prominence from the same emerging player saystem. Saad Ali after hitting a top score of 755 runs in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy was picked by Quetta Gladiators. Sahibzada Farhan who led Faisalabad to victory in the National T20 cup was signed by Islamabad United. Sahibzada Farhan also featured in HongKong Super Sixes this year.
The players who couldn’t be available for the entire season or the foreign ones who refused to travel to Pakistan were present in the supplementary round. The Supplementary round had four editions with each team selecting one player from each round except Lahore Qalandars which couldn’t take part in the last round.
